Displaced Geek

Just a city geek and father coming to terms with being replanted in farm country

A Project!

We were shopping the other day, and unexpectedly came home with this:

55 gallons of potential

That’s right folks, we’re making a rain barrel!

Or at least we’re going to, once I get the parts I need.

  1. Great! My mind says yes, we need one. but I want to see what is involved. What do you do with it in the winter, store it? I shall enjoy seeing how you progress.

    • The common wisdom regarding winterizing is to simply open up everything you can throughout the coldest months, and possibly disconnect the downspout, effectively turning it into just an empty barrel.

It’s going to depend on the size and composition of the spigot, downspout entrance, and overflow pipe whether I think we need to disconnect the entire thing or just open it and let the water run through.
